Study finds insufficient data for the majority of REACH registrations
Study finds insufficient data for the majority of REACH registrations
ECHA or the European Chemicals Agency came up with an evaluation
report in 2018 on REACH Regulation which showed that a lot of essential
information was missing from most of the registrations. In fact, a whopping 75%
of the evaluated REACH registrations had data missing from their entries. Studies
were also conducted by the German Environment Agency (UBA) as well as the German
Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) and they found that around 24
percentage of entries did not meet REACH protocols. Many companies also omitted
essential data that demanded stricter scrutiny of the registrations in the coming
years. ECHA has lately announced that by 2023they are going to evaluate REACH
registrations of more than hundred metric tons. Many non-governmental
organizations have implemented enhanced pressure on ECHA to make sure that the
registrations comply with the REACH regulations.

Nowadays, it has become much more essential that ever before for businesses to submit accurate and valid registrations so that it leads to a successful REACH declaration. This can help in ensuring positive access to the EU markets. ECHA authorities must check through 5 percent of dossiers at diverse tonnages according to EU REACH RegulationArticle 54. ECHA addressed a total of 484 registrations and carried out assessments of 286 dossiers. The organization also asked the registrants to provide with additional information regarding 211 of the evaluations. Once it was revealed that 75% of the registrations lacked sufficient relevant data, ECHA declared that it is going to perform an intensified evaluation to perform compliance checks on 30% of the registrations till the year 2027.
Studies conducted by the UBA and BfR led to results that were seriously disconcerting to many authorities. The German institutes confirmed the fact that around 24% of all dossiers studied and analyzed were non-compliant when they were chosen randomly. However, this is only meant to be taken as average as the actual figures are likely to be more than this. It is believed that around 46 percent of dossiers do not fulfill the information related requirements that have been postulated by REACH. The data gaps like these result from absence of standard data, improper adaptation processes and incompetent methods of data waiving. Multiple trade groups like CEFIC and Concawe have decided that they are going to cooperate with ECHA to check these massive errors and check the dossiers thoroughly as well as submit all vital data voluntarily even before a formal request has been made.
Such a pressure to present with accurate and reliable information is not simply coming from inside the industry. It is believed that launch of the SCIP can further add fuel to the fire by focusing on the commercial establishments operating in the EU and make it mandatory for them to disclose all of their information to the public. This has also made it necessary for the companies within the EU to make use of platform technology systems for automating the data requirements so that they can be compliant with REACH regulations. Many compliance service providers have now come forward to manage this vital necessity.
